What are the different grades of wood floor?
A wooden floor is a healthy choice. It is hard-wearing and gives warmth to a room. All floors are treated the same way through acclimatization, kiln drying and machine making. We grade floors according to the different characteristics of the wood itself.
 |
Select Grade
The face is of best appearance but may contain sapwood, small streaks, pin wormholes, burls, slight imperfections in milling that can be sanded out at installation and small tight knots. |
| |
|
Rustic Grade
This is the most popular flooring grade. You will find knots of any size, colour variation and sap wood are all allowed as long as it doesn't compromise the structural integrity of the floorboard. All boards are supplied with knots pre-filled, although boards with knots open can be produced. |
|
 |
Natural Grade
This grade reflects the natural beauty of the wood itself and has floor boards from both select grade and rustic grade. It gives you an inspiration when installing floors. |
|
What are lacquered and oiled finishes?
 |
Lacquered finish is with aluminium oxide compound which builds up extra wear resistance and provides extremely strong and durable protection. Lacquered finished floorings will have a completely smooth surface with variation of gloss rate from shinny to semi matt. |
 |
Oiled finish expresses the natural look and warmth of the wood. It is easy to see grains and veins of the wood itself. Oiled finish gives the surface of floorings a soft satin look. |
When you choose wooden flooring, you can consider the following factors.
A. Knowing how much you want to spend will save you time because it will narrow your options.
B. Think about the usage of the room. The higher the traffic, the more durable the flooring will have to be. How
much foot traffic a wood flooring will endure also plays a part in choosing the colour of your flooring: Light
coloured floors show less wear and tear than dark coloured floors.
C. Consider the decoration of the room. Formal and traditional decorations look great with uniform grade wooden
flooring, while country, casual and contemporary decoration suit rustic or natural grade wooden flooring.
D. Decide what type of wood you would like. Each type of wood has its own characteristics, For example, oak is a
very hard wood and can be stained into various colours. Get to know your wood options and determine the one
that suits your roomĄ¯s needs.
